Final Reflection: Farewell Almasy

Although I have been saying how great this book is and how much I learned from it, I have to tell everyone that I was LYING. The English Patient is a book that bores you when you are reading and relieves you at the moment when you put it down. The plot progresses so slowly that you'd rather write out the ending with your own imagination. Among the 300 pages, 250 are garbage. Only the leftovers are what truly say something. The setting jumps so frequently (every paragraph sometimes) that you just want to choke the author. Yes, it is a valuable book because of the deep thinking it contains. However, the time you waste while reading is much more valuable than the knowledge you gain. Take out 250 pages, it would have been the perfect book ever. I would NOT recommend this book to anyone in my grade but perhaps to the old whose purpose of reading is merely to spend time.

  4. In that case, I liked the story too :o the plot is actually well designed and I agree it's inspiring. But reading it is just a mere toil :/ Hours after reading my mind will still skip back and forth between past and present...

  5. Our book was pretty awesome, it started off with the main character accidentally indirectly killer his sister because he was humping a pillow.

  7. WOO! I got to say, speak your mind my friend haha. I think most high-school level novels are pretty boring. I agree that these books are probably not to be recommended to people in our age group, since we are all filled with youthful energy. I hope it isn't a bad book though.

  8. The beauty: you ALL chose your own books! You all had the opportunity to go find your own novel if you didn't like the ones I presented you. And so you had to stick it out because it was your choice; not mine. That, and you had too much time invested in it to change ;p
Though I've read The English Patient and watched the movie too, it wouldn't be my choice for teaching a whole class. That's why I didn't order a class set of them and you had to get your own books.
Don't think I don't detect several posts from students that are simply just feeding me words that they think I want to read...lol!

  9. Well... I did not write this blog because I wanted to blame you, Ms. K, for recommending the novel, nor did I simply feed you words that I thought you would like to read. I wrote this post out of a sense of respect for this project. Because I saw the blog posts as a way for you, Ms. K, to understand how we felt while reading, I spoke out honestly and did not mind the risk of getting a harsh criticism back. After all, one thing I for sure learned from this project is to speak out our mind, and to share our feelings after reading with others, so that they may use my evaluation of the novel as a reference in judging whether they would like to read the novel or not. Not everyone has the same opinion over the same subject. I enjoyed doing this project a lot. The phantom skills that I learned and the altruistic trait I studied from the novel are more valuable than anything else, and would be immensely beneficial to my entire life. I understand that I spoke out rashly and might have enraged you. However this is merely an opinion I have on ONE ASPECT of the novel, and only the novel. I apologize if this has been a bad influence, and I swear that my only intention in writing this is to reveal a candid thought.

  10. oh Martin... :/
I did not think you were blaming me! I thought you were telling the truth. So was I. I am just asserting the fact that this project was all about each student making choices and then following through with them. Which is what you did. I am very happy everyone feels comfortable enough to say their mind and yes, I do encourage that! I respect your honesty and I was being honest too: I think I was fed a few lines by several students! lol! Don't beat yourself up about it. No offense taken. We were just being honest with each other and there's no problem with that, right?
